These activities are endorsed by the Australian College of Midwifes for MidPLUS points equivalent to the number of activity hours.
Other health professionals can complete these activities and receive certificates.

This ALM discusses the screening and further assessment of women in the perinatal period for possible depression and/or anxiety. A range of both pharmacological and non pharmacological management modalities are discussed and the development of team based care arrangements are explored. This education is also available as a series of 6 one hour activities.

1. Overview of Perinatal Mental Health and the Need to Screen

This activity is part 1 of a series of 6, which is also available as part of an ALM.
This activity addresses perinatal depression and anxiety and emphasises the importance of early detection and management of these conditions. The goal of the activity is to raise awareness of perinatal mental health conditions and to emphasise the need to implement universal screening in pregnant and postnatal women, with the goal of identifying perinatal mental health disorders early.

2. Depression Screening Using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS)

This activity is part 2 of a series of 6, which is also available as part of an ALM.
The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is a simple to use screening tool that allows an informed judgement about the mental health and well being of patients in the perinatal period. Follow the key features in applying the EPDS to your clinical practice.

3. PND: Further Assessment and Management

This activity is part 3 of a series of 6, which is also available as part of an ALM.
This activity focuses specially on how to conduct a psychosocial assessment to gain a better understanding of the woman’s life circumstances including her past and current social, emotional and psychological status. The activity details how to integrate the results from the EPDS, psychosocial assessment and other symptomatolgy to determine the woman’s level of risk and develop a risk management strategy.

4. PND: Pathways to Care: Collaborative Practice

This activity is part 4 of a series of 6, which is also available as part of an ALM.
This activity emphasises the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, where available, and collaboration between service providers. The need for knowledge concerning local referral pathways for different levels of risk, severity and complexity of mental health disorders are explored. Plans to illustrate such pathways will be used as examples to illustrate how one can lighten the load for some families.

5. PND: GP Mental Health Treatment Plans

This activity is part 5 of a series of 6, which is also available as part of an ALM.
This education emphasises the role of the primary care team, and the central role of the general practitioner, in the management of perinatal mental health disorders. This activity focuses on the assessment of women with suspected perinatal mental health disorders and discusses management options. The role of the GP mental health treatment plan is discussed.

6. Management of perinatal depression

This activity is part 6 of a series of 6, which is also available as part of an ALM.
This education expands on the role of the primary care team in the management of perinatal mental health disorders. The various pharmacological management modalities are discussed as is the development of the GP mental health treatment plan.
