Carers NSW
A carer is any individual who provides care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, mental illness, drug and/or alcohol dependency, chronic condition, terminal illness or who is frail. Carers come from all walks of life, cultural backgrounds and age groups. There are approximately 2.7 million carers across Australia (about 12% of the population), including 904,400 carers in NSW.1
Carers NSW is the peak non-government organisation for carers in NSW and a member of the National Network of Carers Associations. Our focus is on improving the lives of carers.
Carers NSW works with all carers regardless of their age, location, life-stage or circumstances. This includes those caring for individuals with support needs relating to ageing, disability, health and mental illness.

Young Carers
Young carers are children or young people, 25 years or under, who help care for someone in their family who has a disability, mental illness, drug and/or alcohol dependency, chronic condition, terminal illness or who is frail.
Young carers are a hidden carer group, often not acknowledged for their caring contribution. It is estimated that 96,500 young people, aged 25 or under, living in NSW are carers.1
The Carers NSW Young Carer Program was developed to make a positive difference in the lives of young carers and their families through a range of initiatives and opportunities.
The Young Carer Program supports and connects young carers through:
  • an interactive Young Carer website
  • access to exclusive online forums
  • Carers NSW Young Carer Leadership Program
  • counselling
  • emotional support
  • information and referrals
  • newsletters
  • young carer awareness workshops
  • young carer opportunities and events

    Carers NSW 2018 Carer Survey
The Carers NSW 2018 Carer Survey (Carer Survey) is a survey of carers in NSW. The Carer Survey is the largest piece of work undertaken by Carers NSW and is an opportunity for carers to have their say on the issues that are most important to them in their caring roles.
The results of the Carer Survey are used to inform the work of Carers NSW and help us to advocate for cares and their needs.
