This ALM looks at the key diagnostic and management features for anxiety disorders commonly presenting in general practice. The education covers the age spectrum, ranging from prenatally to the elderly. The role of the GP as part of a primary care team is discussed together with the principles for best practice management of these conditions.

By completing this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • State the key diagnostic features of the commonly encountered anxiety disorders.
  • Discuss the key management features of the anxiety disorders commonly encountered in general practice.
  • Recall the important co-morbidities associated with anxiety disorders and the impacts these co-morbidities may have on patients.
  • Indicate a system to involve a team approach to mental health including a treatment plan and practice system of review.
  • Ensure patient safety with the early identification of serious at risk behaviour in patients with mental health issues.
