Cancer in General Practice. Module 3: Familial cancers and family history

The purpose of this session is to increase your understanding of the interplay between cancer and genetics, particularly familial breast cancer and familial bowel cancer.

By completing this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • More frequently collect and update their patient's family history (where possible three generations - maternal and paternal)
  • Assess and advise patients of risk
  • Discuss the management of average/moderately-increased risk patients with recommendations focusing on: a. primary prevention; b. early detection of symptoms; c. screening based on current guidelines appropriate to their level of risk
  • Manage potentially high risk patients in conjunction with the Family Cancer Centre or other specialty service with appropriate screening, surveillance and counselling in regard to genetic test result and family implications
  • Ensure patient safety by providing patients with appropriate information relating to their risk category
