This activity discusses the assessment of insomnia and the exclusion of underlying co-morbid medical conditions. The currently available hypnotic medications are compared and their use in the various classes of insomnia discussed.

After completing this activity participants will be able to:

• Identify patients with insomnia.
• Assess the underlying co-morbid mental and physical conditions related to insomnia.
• Discuss the various drug classes available for the management of insomnia.
• State the non pharmacological modalities available to manage insomnia.
• Ensure patient safety by discussing the various drugs and their effects prior to prescribing hypnotics in the management of insomnia.
