Barry: A case study in diabetes management

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is increasing in prevalence and is a common cause of morbidity and mortality. In persons with diabetes, vascular complications are the usual cause of adverse outcomes. Controlling cardiovascular risk factors in persons with diabetes can reduce macrovascular complications. This is a one hour interactive online activity to promote diabetes management to reduce vascular disease risk in older men.
Objectives

  • To understand the importance of diabetes as a risk factor for vascular events.
  • To understand the interaction between different risk factors for vascular disease, such as renal disease, hyperlipidaemia and hypertension.
  • Appreciate the role and evidence and evidenced based management of microalbuminuria in patients with diabetes
  • To understand the evidence for the use of ramipril in patients with diabetes and microalbuminuria to slow the progression of renal disease and help prevent vascular events
  • To understand some of the barriers to initiating pharmacotherapy and titrating to appropriate doses in general practice.
