The key features in managing STIs - STI Testing Tool

This education utilises the NSW STIPU STI Testing Tool to guide GPs in the management of STIs. The education will guide the participant through the Who? Why? Which? and How? of STI testing as well as providing tips on sensitively initiating a discussion with patients about their sexual history. Resources are provided to assist with contact tracing.

Opioids and chronic pain

This education discusses the use of opioids in the management of chronic pain. Pain management is discussed in terms of holistic management, with other treatment modalities explored. The WHO pain ladder is placed in context and the drugs described in the ladder discussed in detail.

Managing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients with hepatitis B and hepatitis C

This education discusses the management of hepatitis B & C in Aboriginal patients. The prevalence, diagnosis and natural history are explored. The cultural aspects impacting on detection and management are outlined and options for overcoming barriers to care are detailed.

The use of benzodiazepines in the elderly

This education discusses the use of benzodiazepines in the elderly. The background to the use of the drug in Australia is discussed, as well as the indications for use and the side effects and potential consequences of longer term use. Alternative options are presented and schedules for drug withdrawal discussed.

E-health supporting patient care

This activity will assist participants in identifying areas in practice where the introduction of e-health will benefit patients, the practice and the practitioners. The role of healthcare identifiers is explored and the advantages discussed. The personally controlled electronic health record is discussed and a sample patient journey using the PCEHR is used as an example to illustrate the potential role it can play in assisting with the sharing of health information.

Corridor Consult - a visit to a group home

This case discusses the diagnostic dilemma in a patient with intellectual disability and limited mobility. The clinical scenario offers various options to explain the patient’s deterioration and increased number of seizures. The participant is encouraged to consider all the possible explanations and is assisted in reaching a diagnosis and management decision.

Seizure disorders in general practice

This video education will discuss the current classification of seizure disorders. Assessment and management of seizure disorders will be discussed and recommendations made for assisting the patient and their family to manage the impacts of the condition of their lives. Access to a range of resources will be facilitated.

Cancer – Let’s talk about sex

This activity looks at issues related to sexuality in our patients who have had cancer. Asking a patient with cancer about their sexual health and discussing how this can be managed is so important to minimise the impact of the disease on a person's total well being.

eHealth for practice staff

This education will discuss the role of practice staff in eHealth, including the purpose and function of the personally controlled electronic health record (PCEHR), the Health Identifiers (HI) service, the quality use of data and the utilisation of e-tools to facilitate data cleansing and ensuring the quality of data in general practice.

Covering patient risk: Taking control of cardiovascular risk

This education will focus on the assessment of absolute cardiovascular risk. Use of various risk calculators will be discussed. The management of patients at risk of cardiovascular disease as a result of hypertension will be a focus of the education. Those with a BP reading not at target will be considered, and the development of a management plan for them will be described.

Sexual Health: history taking, testing and contact tracing

This education will discuss sexual health. Topics to be covered include the aspects required to take a comprehensive sexual health history, the requirements to include on a pre-and post testing counselling session and the need for contact tracing. Vignettes demonstrate how to initiate consultations which GPs and patients may find awkward, and also discusses the testing required for the comprehensive management of sexually transmissible infections.

Lifestyle risk factors: Evidence based strategies to support behaviour change

This Active Learning Module has been developed to support your work in preventing major chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. It will focus on lifestyle risk factors known to be linked to these major chronic diseases: smoking, hazardous alcohol consumption, poor nutrition, lack of physical activity and overweight and obesity.

STI Contact Tracing for General Practice

The educational activity discusses the role of general practitioners in contact tracing for STIs. The opportunities to initiate a discussion with patients are identified, advice provided in relation to the STIs for which contact tracing is recommended and methods to do this described. Options to assist patients with tracing sexual contacts are also described.

Aboriginal Health - Closing the gap in your practice

This education discusses the reasons why it is important for general practices to have systems in place to identify their patients who are Aboriginal. The education discusses the specific Medicare item numbers applicable to Aboriginal patients, as well as other specific initiatives. The barriers to care are discussed and methods to overcome these are explored. The role of these initiatives and item numbers in patient management is discussed.

Chronic Ulcers and Dressings

This activity reviews the various types of chronic leg ulcers, their causes and predisposing factors. The activity encompasses the various types of dressings available and provides a guide to the choice of the appropriate dressing.
