Atrial fibrillation: Rate vs. Rhythm
This education will discuss the diagnosis and management of atrial fibrillation. Rate and rhythm management will be discussed and the role of anticoagulation will be emphasised. The calculation of cardiovascular risk and the role of atrial fibrillation as a risk factor for stroke is considered.
By completing this learning activity, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the diagnosis of atrial fibrillation and the special investigations utilised to make the diagnosis.
- Assess the patient’s absolute cardiovascular risk.
- Recall the risk of stroke in relation to atrial fibrillation.
- Indicate the key management features of atrial fibrillation: rate and rhythm control and anticoagulation.
- Ensure patient safety by implementing practice systems to monitor those patients on anticoagulant medication.
