This education discusses the use of opioids in the management of chronic pain. Pain management is discussed in terms of holistic management, with other treatment modalities explored. The WHO pain ladder is placed in context and the drugs described in the ladder discussed in detail.

This education discusses the use of benzodiazepines in the elderly. The background to the use of the drug in Australia is discussed, as well as the indications for use and the side effects and potential consequences of longer term use. Alternative options are presented and schedules for drug withdrawal discussed.

E-health supporting patient care

This activity will assist participants in identifying areas in practice where the introduction of e-health will benefit patients, the practice and the practitioners. The role of healthcare identifiers is explored and the advantages discussed. The personally controlled electronic health record is discussed and a sample patient journey using the PCEHR is used as an example to illustrate the potential role it can play in assisting with the sharing of health information.

Cancer – Let’s talk about sex

This activity looks at issues related to sexuality in our patients who have had cancer. Asking a patient with cancer about their sexual health and discussing how this can be managed is so important to minimise the impact of the disease on a person's total well being.

eHealth for practice staff

Aboriginal Health - Closing the gap in your practice

This education discusses the reasons why it is important for general practices to have systems in place to identify their patients who are Aboriginal. The education discusses the specific Medicare item numbers applicable to Aboriginal patients, as well as other specific initiatives. The barriers to care are discussed and methods to overcome these are explored. The role of these initiatives and item numbers in patient management is discussed.

The key diagnostic and management features of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

This education discusses the diagnosis of SLE and the criteria, both clinical and serological, required to confirm the diagnosis. The clinical presentation of SLE may differ widely between patients and the range of possible presentations is discussed based on the affected organ(s). The current pharmacotherapies available and their indications and side effects are discussed. Pregnancy and SLE is also discussed.

This ALM looks at the key diagnostic and management features for anxiety disorders commonly presenting in general practice. The education covers the age spectrum, ranging from prenatally to the elderly. The role of the GP as part of a primary care team is discussed together with the principles for best practice management of these conditions.

Common paediatric orthopaedic conditions

This education will focus on the key diagnostic and management strategies in evaluating common paediatric orthopaedic conditions which present in general practice. The education will discuss the conditions occurring in the spine and lower limbs, the investigations, differential diagnoses and the appropriate management.

The limping child

This education will focus on the key diagnostic and management strategies in evaluating the limping child. The education will discuss common paediatric gait abnormalities and the assessment, differential diagnoses and appropriate management of a child with a limp.

Childhood immunisation

This activity reviews the recommendations around childhood vaccination and considers strategies to increase the uptake of childhood vaccination.The national vaccination schedule will be discussed in addition to current general practice immunisation initiatives.

Adult immunisation

This activity looks at the immunisation recommendations for adults. Issues discussed include the current recommended vaccination schedule for adults, the Australian whooping cough epidemic and the vaccination of groups with special needs.
