Aim

To improve patients’ awareness of, and participation in, the three national cancer screening programs for breast, bowel and cervical cancer through general practice, specifically utilising recall and reminder systems and the HotDoc SMART (SMS) solution.

What is a PDSA Cycle?

The Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) Cycle uses simple measurements to monitor the effects of change over time. It focuses on improving the capability of the practice to deliver on quality patient care.
It encourages general practice to start with small changes, which can be built into larger improvements quickly through successive cycles of change. It breaks down change to manageable portions, using simple measurements over a minimum of two cycles. It encourages practices to review their progress and to develop strategies for improvement.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this PDSA activity, GPs (and practice staff) should be able to:

  • Understand and explain the important role of general practice as the major initial patient contact point in cancer prevention and screening, and the impact of endorsement by the GP and practice team.
  • Analyse and evaluate the practice’s current recall and reminder procedures/systems to ensure eligible patients for cancer screening for breast, bowel and cervical cancer are identified and engaged.
  • Design and implement a whole-practice approach to improve patient’s awareness of, and participation in bowel, cervical and/or breast cancer screening, including the use of SMS recalls and reminders.
  • Implement the use of SMS recalls and reminders ensuring eligible patients for cancer screening are contacted safely and effectively.
