Up to 10% of all cancers may be caused by inherited genetic changes, with breast and colorectal cancer having among the highest genetic contributions. This module provides an overview of how GPs can identify patients who may be at high risk of familial breast or colorectal cancer, and provides practical guidance on referring to a Family Cancer Centre for genetic assessment to guide further care.

    Learning outcomes

On completion of this educational activity participants will be able to:
Identify appropriate patients for referral to Familial Cancer Centres.
Undertake a family history relevant to familial cancer.
Explain the potential medical prevention and risk management strategies to patients at high risk of familial cancer.
