The new 2022 Australian consensus statement on heart failure has brought significant changes to how general practitioners should manage this condition.

In this advanced course you will understand how to classify HF into heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), heart failure with mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF) or heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Explore how to apply updated recommendations for first-line treatment of these HF subtypes in primary care, and recognise how the pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment of HFpEF may differ from HFrEF and HFmrEF.

On completion of this education activity participants will be able to:

    • Identify the role GPs play in the management of HF.
    • Determine the diagnostic work-up in suspected HF and understand how to classify it into HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF), or preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF).
    • Recognise phenotypic differences and similarities between HF subtypes.
    • Describe updated guidelines for first line treatment of HF subtypes and explain differences in their pharmacological treatment.
    • Evaluate the role of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor (SGLT2i) therapy as a first line treatment option in HF and appraise the clinical evidence supporting this class of therapy.

This activity is sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly Alliance.
